When I chose to study Ethical Hacking at Abertay University, it wasn’t the technology that drew me, it was the opportunity to protect people. From the start, my core motivation has been about safeguarding what really matters; the individuals behind the data, the employees depending on secure systems, and the customers trusting us with their personal information.
Why Cybersecurity is People-First
Too often, cybersecurity is framed as a purely technical field, dominated by firewalls, algorithms, and cutting-edge tools. While technology plays a crucial role, its true value lies in how it protects people. Without a people-first approach, even the most advanced technology can fail.
Here’s why focusing on people is essential:
Employees need secure and reliable systems to perform their jobs effectively.
Customers trust businesses with their personal information, and that trust is the foundation of any relationship.
Leadership decisions shape the security culture of an organisation, influencing how risks are prioritised and managed.
The Role of Cybersecurity Leaders
As cybersecurity professionals, our job isn’t just about implementing technology, it’s about advising and empowering people to make secure decisions. A strong security culture is built by fostering buy-in, awareness, and action at all levels of an organisation.
Here’s how we do it:
Instill Awareness: Educate employees and leadership on the importance of cybersecurity. It’s not just IT’s job; it’s everyone’s responsibility.
Create a Culture of Security: Embed security into everyday operations and decisions. When security is second nature, organisations thrive.
Use Technology as a Shield: Leverage tools and systems as enablers of protection, ensuring they serve their purpose of keeping people safe.
Technology as the Enabler, Not the Answer
Technology is a powerful shield, but it’s only as effective as the people wielding it. A phishing simulation can only teach employees so much if there’s no follow-up discussion. A state-of-the-art firewall is meaningless if the leadership team isn’t prioritising risk management.
In every breach, every hack, and every security failure, it’s the actions, decisions, and awareness of people that determine the outcome. Cybersecurity is fundamentally a human issue, and that’s what makes it so critical.
As an industry, let’s focus not just on the tools we use, but on the people we protect. Let’s advise, educate, and empower. Let’s build security cultures that are inclusive, resilient, and prioritise what matters most—the safety and trust of people.
Because at the heart of every security strategy, every piece of technology, and every decision we make is one simple truth: Cybersecurity is about people.
